Algorithmic Sciences

Software engineering recruitment: Africa

Dear software engineer, welcome. This page explains what the work involves and how candidates get an offer from us.

We are glad to move forward with your application. Please read this page carefully before you continue.

What is Algorithmic Sciences, and what does it stand for?

Our company keeps a very specific working culture. We are meritocratic and pragmatic, and we value intelligent scientific debate and evidence over any other argument.

Algorithmic Sciences value statement

Because of that, software engineering roles at Algorithmic Sciences call for a perfectionist attitude. The workload is heavy, with a lot of advanced software engineering in Python and C or C++. We do not hire data scientists, and the role does not involve machine learning or data science. We are looking for experienced software engineers.

The job requires at least 40 working hours a week, with activity levels of at least 40% tracked by a screen tracking application. If you have less than three to four years of professional software engineering experience, if you do not know C or C++, or if you are not fully confident that you can pass a technical interview about Python, please do not continue your application.

The work is demanding, and it is also challenging and rewarding. When we see you work hard, focus well and deliver precise work, we take good care of you and can offer a stable, long-term job.

How do candidates get an offer?

The diagram below shows the rounds you need to pass before we make an offer.

If you fail the tests in the online assessment centre, you might still get the chance to show us what you can do as a software engineer, if we see that you made a real effort during testing. So it is worth giving it your best. If we see that you did not take the tests seriously, we will not continue your assessment.

How much does the job pay?

We want to give more people in Africa an opportunity, so we offer salary levels that let us hire more people. For the average Python developer in Africa the salary is between $500 and $1,100 a month, depending on experience and on your test results. It is possible to earn more, but first we ask you to pass a trial period so we can get to know you. Please only continue if you accept these terms.

Where do I take the first assessment?

Visit focustests.com and register with your real name, exactly as you gave it to us, and your email address.

The tests need a one-time token. If you applied for a job with us, you received it by email. The token lets you register once and take the tests at any time within 168 hours of receiving it.

What are the tests like?

There are three tests on focustests.com, each 60 minutes long. The numerical and verbal tests measure your analytical skills and your ability to focus for a long time. The Python test needs an advanced knowledge of professional software engineering in Python.

Your test results directly shape the salary offer you receive.

You do best on these tests in a fresh and calm state of mind. If you want to show your best performance, do not take all three tests on the same day.

Each test shows an example question when you click “Start”. The clock only starts after you click “Continue”.

Make sure your internet connection is stable. If your connection drops, the countdown timer in your browser falls out of step by the time you were offline, and the test submits automatically before the timer in your browser reaches zero.

What do I do after the tests?

After the tests, send us an email, otherwise we are not told your score. Attach your CV to confirm that you want to continue your application on the terms above. Please use “Reply” in your email program and keep the subject line, so everything stays in one thread.

We wish you the best of luck, and we hope to work with you for a long time.
